Reviving Culture:

Drawing inspiration from my Turkish, Armenian, and ancient Mesopotamian heritage, this project revives forgotten motifs by developing them through a process of turning hand drawing, painting, and screen printings into design outcomes.

Emphasising the importance of celebrating culture and authenticity in a world filled with constricting consumer categorisations, ‘Reviving Culture’ aims to ignite inspiration for people, by offering a textile design solution, bringing symbolism and cultural elements to our everyday lives.

Instilling a sense of authentic identity and belonging and ensuring the continuity of heritage through art and design for the future generations.

Process

& Research:

Drawing inspiration from personal observations and experiences, this project is focused on the issue of the increasing loss of sense of belonging and loss of cultural identity caused by influences on finding self-worth and value through material goods and brand identities. Alongside as well as consumer types and profiles as their main identity. This project aims to solve this issue by creating a design proposal as an inspiration on how people can continue carrying out parts of their culture and heritage in their everyday lives. As a firm believer that people are more than categorised consumer groups, this proposal intends to inspire people to find their authentic selves through art and culture by designing ways to carry out their culture in everyday life and celebrating heritage.

I have used my ancestral heritage of Ancient Mesopotamian civilisations and Armenian and Turkish cultural motifs for visual research to illustrate how this proposal could be incorporated into a particular culture. Through continuous drawings, screenprint experimentations and impressions of the motifs, a fresh style suitable for the current age to be carried out is achieved by drawing styles and lighter colour selections. Thus, by reviving the motifs once again, they could be remembered and colour everyday life.

The selected motifs carry historical and cultural meaning, such as the pomegranate and its significance in all the chosen cultures by representing abundance and fertility. Pinecones symbolise regeneration, spirituality, and human enlightenment in Ancient Mesopotamia and the spiral flowers ("Arevakhach"), meaning the sun cross, symbolising eternity.

By adding my own style to research motifs, I have developed a body of multidisciplinary design works that can be incorporated into various parts of our lives. The final screenprinted fabrics demonstrates how the created designs could be embodied in multiple areas like rugs for interiors or as scarves for accessories.
